In preparation and to get the best out of your appointment we need to gather as much information about you as possible. This helps us to better understand what factors are contributing to your problem and the concerns you have.

It is our goal to provide a comprehensive assessment and evaluation of your health care needs to reach a diagnosis and compile an effective treatment plan.

Please bring with you any relevant medical letters from other medical specialists, for example cardiologist, renal physician and any discharge summaries from recent stays in hospital.

Prior to your appointment with your doctor, you will need to perform a flow test so please come with a full bladder. The flow test measures how strong your urine flow is and records the amount of urine your bladder can hold. Following the flow test, your doctor may want to check the volume of urine remaining in your bladder. This is done by performing a bladder scan.

Please print and complete the attached forms and return to your Specialist's PA or bring with you to your next appointment:

1. The international prostate symptom score, or I-PPS which is calculated based on the answers to seven questions concerning urinary symptoms and one question concerning quality of life (IPSS)
2. The Sexual health inventory for men, or SHIM questionnaire is a clinically validated inventory for the screening and diagnosis or erectile dysfunction. This result can be discussed at your clinic appointment (SHIM)

161 Theatre admission

There are things you can do personally to make sure your operation and recovery go as smoothly as possible.

Once you and your surgeon have decided on a date and time for your surgery at OneSixOne Day Stay Theatre, your surgeon's secretary will give you forms to complete. We require these to be completed in advance of your surgery. Please send these to OneSixOne at soon as possible. Please complete the Theatre Consent Form and Anaethesia Assessment Form and send to OneSixOne ASAP.

The day before your surgery, our theatre manager Dhara Parmar will call you with questions on your health, your medications (including herbal) and to provide advice on what to wear and bring on the day. She will also advise on dietary Dos and Don'ts in the hours leading up to your surgery.

Preoperative

• Assess your work and family schedule and determine what is the most favourable period given your other commitments.
• Collect information about your expected recovery time from your consultant/surgeon.
• Be realistic about how much energy and enthusiasm you will have following surgery.
• Make arrangements for a ride to and from OneSixOne, since any surgery requiring anaesthesia will render you unable to drive yourself home.
• Know your rehabilitation and physical therapy plan ahead of time.

What to Bring

• All medications including inhalers and any herbal medicines you may be taking
• Loose comfortable clothing
• Any scan results we don't have on file
• Personal aids, glasses, walking sticks, reading material etc.
• Insurance "prior approval" documentation if relevant. A Southern Cross Claim Form is here.

On Arrival

You will be asked to arrive at least 30 minutes before your surgery start time. Our receptionist will check you in, and request your Prior Approval documentation. Shortly after, a recovery nurse will come and get you from the waiting room. They will have some questions for you, just to check the information we have is correct.

Your anaethetist will come and discuss the anaesthetic procedure, followed by your surgeon who will explain a few things to you prior to your anaesthesia.

In Theatre

When your surgeon is ready for you, the nurses will come and get you and take you to the theatre to prepare you for your procedure...

...you will wake up in the recovery room and here you will be looked after by a recovery nurse. When you are deemed to be ready to leave the nurse will talk to your support person about your care and follow up.

At home after your operation

• Because you go home on the day of your operation it is compulsory that you have someone with you for 24 hours.
• DO NOT drive a vehicle or use machinery or potentially dangerous household appliances after any general anaesthetic or sedation for 24 hours following your procedure.
• Do not eat a heavy meal, drink alcohol or take sleeping pills following your procedure.
• You should rest and leave important decisions for another day.
• Do not lift heavy things or engage in strenuous exercise.
   

We will ring you a few days after your discharge to check on your progress, however if you are worried about anything at all then contact us, your GP, or your local Accident & Medical. 

In the event of a medical emergency, call an ambulance immediately (111).

General Precautions

1. Identify yourself by name to our staff. This helps ensure that no mistakes are made about your identity.
2. Inform the surgical staff completely about medications you are already taking, including nonprescription drugs, herbal supplements, vitamins and the dosages. Also inform them of any allergies. 
3. You may have someone stay at OneSixOne during your surgery, however they may like to visit the local shopping precinct for coffee etc. and return at a given time to collect you. We are minutes from Newmarket's main street, and Mt Eden Village.
